Information:

Many users feel safer driving their Frogeye / Bugeye with a roll-over bar/loop added, particularly if using for track days. And yes, we also know that some purists don’t like the look either! However there is no disputing that the roll-over loop significantly stiffens the chassis. These bars are manufactured by Fabricage in the UK, a leading independent roll-over bar / roll-cage motorsports fabricator.

The simple loop design is most suitable for road use. It does not damage, or obstruct access to, the rear boot/trunk area and does not obstruct soft-top operation.

For added strength, for instance for use on track days, a bolt in diagonal design is also available – this diagonal can be removed quickly by two Allen bolts. The diagonal slightly obstructs access to the rear boot/trunk when fitted, however it is still possible to pass the spare wheel through.

For the racers an additional forward facing diagonal strut is also available that bolts across the passenger seat position - this does however require removal of the passenger seat base to fit.

All variants are supplied in powder-coated satin black by default, other colours available by special order.

Fitting:

A full fitting kit is supplied and fitting is 3-4 hours work for a home-mechanic. Basically the steps are:

  1. Remove seats and rear wheels.
  2. Place roll-bar in position. Mark holes then remove roll-bar again.
  3. Drill 4 holes in each foot plate position.
  4. Replace roll-bar and check hole alignment
  5. Place the reinforcing plate under the floor/arch and tighten the supplied bolts
  6. (Optional) Fit high level LED brake light
  7. Replace seats and rear wheels.

RHD / LHD:

The simple loop design is suitable for both RHD and LHD vehicles. All diagonal loop designs held in stock are RHD for UK cars (i.e. the diagonal is high on the right hand side of the car, above the driver’s head). However we can also manufacture LHD diagonals (for US / Europe cars) to order – please call for more details.

History:

Around 20 years ago the renowned Sprite/Midget racer Gordon Elwell imported a very true, original Californian chassis and then worked with a leading UK independent roll cage manufacturer (Fabricage) to develop a jig for producing roll-over bars for Frogeye/Bugeye Sprites that did not cut through the rear deck. Now that Gordon has retired we have purchased the jig and are manufacturing small batches of the roll loops for Frogeye/Bugeye Sprite enthusiasts.
